After oils, greases account for the second-largest consumption in the world (around four percent). It can be said that without the use of this lubricant, no country’s economy would function. The formulation, manufacturing, reactions, and applications of grease encompass a complete set of technologies, involving extensive fields of physics, chemistry, and chemical engineering.

Grease is a semi-solid to solid lubricant formed by combining a liquid lubricant (such as mineral or vegetable oil) with a thickening agent (often soap-based) and additives. This combination allows grease to stay in place and, unlike liquid lubricants like oils, provide continuous lubrication and protection against wear and corrosion in machine parts.

Properties of Grease:

Shear thinning: Initially, grease shows high viscosity but becomes more fluid under shear stress, allowing it to act like a liquid when needed.

Sealing properties: Grease can act as a sealant, preventing lubricant leakage and removing contaminants.

Adhesion: Grease adheres well to surfaces, forming a protective layer that reduces friction and wear.

Process Steps:

Measuring and adding reactants: Fatty acids, base oils, water, alkalis, and metal hydroxides are added to the reactor.

Saponification: The mixture is heated in a reactor to convert fatty acids and alkalis into soap.

Water removal: Excess water is removed.

Cooling and homogenizing: Base oil is added for cooling, and the mixture is homogenized to achieve the desired consistency.

De-gassing and filling: Air is removed, and the grease is packaged.
